Yamaha has finally, after five long years, revealed the much anticipated next generation 2017 YZF-R15 V3 at an event in Indonesia. The new 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 was launched in Indonesia on January 23 and is expected to reach Indian shores soon.
In an interview, Yamaha Motor Research & Development India Managing Director, Yasuo Ishihara has confirmed that the upcoming 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 “will be a notch up from the current generation in all aspects of performance and safety.”
Ishihara said, “In the sports commuter segment, our customers are gradually increasing. And that is particularly to attract a younger audience. Our direction would be towards the fact that whoever buys the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3, like the R3, they should be able to enjoy the bike more than anything else.”
Ishihara remained silent about the performance numbers and the expected launch date! But, the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 gets a noticeable change to styling along with the inclusion of some first-in-segment features. It has also grown in size as compared to the R15 V2.0 that’s currently on sale in the country, but with a shorter wheelbase. The bike also features an all-new engine that makes it one of the most powerful bikes in the 150cc segment.
2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 Overview:
Talking about the exterior, the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 measures 1,990mm in length, 725mm in width and 1,135mm in height. This makes the new version 30mm longer, 55mm wider and 65mm taller than the current version. The wheelbase has come down from 1,345mm to 1,325mm which should make the bike feel more agile.
The seat height has also gone up from 800mm to 815mm, which should provide a more aggressive riding position, reiterating the fact that the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 takes its racing pedigree very seriously. The new bike weighs 137kg, 1kg more than the R15 V2.0.
2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 Design:
On the design front, the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 features an aggressive design styling which is in line with the previous-generation YZF-R6 along with a slight tinge of a Honda Supersport design. The front fascia is entirely new and features angular LED headlamp cluster separated by a central vent for air intake. The fairing is also more edgy this time, giving the bike a more athletic stance, while the fuel tank is at 11 litres as against the V2.0’s 12 litres.
2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 Engine:
Powering the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 is an all new 155.1 cc single cylinder, liquid-cooled, 4 stroke SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) engine with fuel injection in place of the V2.0, 149cc mill. The new mill develops 19.7bhp of power 10,000rpm and peak torque is 14.7Nm at 8500rpm mated to six-speed transmission. Compared to the current R15 on sale, power of YZF-R15 Version 3.0 has gone up by 3bhp while maintaining the torque at 15NM.
The addition of Variable Valve Actuation technology (VVA) to the engine will help compensate the lack of a dual overhead cam. In fact, VVA will assist the Yamaha R15 v3 to produce an ideal amount of power at low, mid as well as high rpm range.
2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 Features:
The 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 is equipped with slipper clutch. It will minimise the effects of engine braking under aggressive downshifts. Yamaha employed upside down forks up front and mono suspension at the rear. Braking is taken care of by 282mm disc up front and 240mm disc at the rear.
The 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3’s instrument cluster is fully digital unlike its predecessor, that had an analogue tachometer. The bike also sits on meatier 100/80-17 and 140/70-17 tyres at the front and rear, respectively. On the safety front, the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 will also benefit from ABS.
The 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V2 has a sticker price of INR 118,373 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and due to the new safety and performance hardware, the 2017 Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 is expected to get a price bump.
